Katherine Holmes Kate Holmes is a Biodiversity Specialist working with the Marine Program at the Center for Biodiversity and Conservation (CBC) of the American Museum of Natural History. She is involved in a range of projects in multiple locations. She has been working with a diverse team of governmental and non-governmental organizations, researchers, and educators contributing to a large scale, multi-disciplinary project to investigate marine reserve network design in The Bahamas and producing outreach materials (see Science Bulletins). Kate is involved in collaborative research projects at Palmyra Atoll studying coral community dynamics as well as the local sea turtle populations. She is working with collaborators on a Pacific-wide survey of bioeroding sponge species.   She is also conducting biocultural research in Vanuatu in the South Pacific where she has been documenting language use and cultural practices associated with the marine environment of people who speak two endangered languages. Prior to joining the CBC, Kate spent three years in Vanuatu in the South Pacific documenting customary marine management practices and creating non-formal educational tools to encourage a blend of traditional and modern approaches to conservation. She has also contributed to the establishment of marine reserves in the Philippines, conducted marine research in Indonesia and Barbados, and participated in ecological research in Ecuador and Canada. Kate holds an M.Sc. in Biology from McGill University.
