Population Growth
There
are presently about six billion people living today. Already, many of these people
are concentrated in cities and regions that are unable to provide basic needs
such as food, fresh water, and sanitary living conditions.
As populations grow in the next century, continued demands and distribution problems
for food and water are expected to overwhelm any gains in technology and social
equity.
Most population forecasts predict that human numbers will stabilize somewhere
between eight and twelve billion people between the middle and end of the 21st
century.
Many factors contribute to rates of population growth, including the degree of
poverty, the level of education and economic power of women, and the availability
of family planning and other health care services.
